About the Gross-Up Calculator

A gross-up works backward from the amount someone should receive after tax. Enter the net amount, the salary, filing status and state, and the calculator finds the gross payment needed to cover the 22% federal supplemental rate, Social Security, Medicare and estimated state tax.

Frequently asked questions

What does grossing up mean?

Grossing up means paying a larger gross amount so that the person receives a chosen amount after taxes are withheld.

Why is the gross higher than the net?

Taxes are taken out of the gross payment, and the tax on the extra gross amount must also be covered, so the gross is higher than a simple addition would suggest.

Is the result exact?

These results are estimates for planning, not tax advice. They do not include local taxes, health insurance, or other payroll deductions.
